What does a cleaner actually do in 2 hours?

Two hours is enough for a thorough kitchen, a bathroom, floors throughout and surfaces in the rooms you use most - about a 1-bed flat in full, or a 2-bed house if you choose your priorities.

The short answer

Two hours is roughly 120 minutes of actual work, and the jobs that matter take a predictable amount of it. Our booking system allocates time room by room, using these figures for a standard clean:

RoomMinutes allowed
Kitchen40
Bathroom30
Living room30
Bedroom25
Dining room20
Reception or other room25

The arithmetic is unforgiving. A 1-bed flat with one bathroom comes to 125 minutes, so two hours covers it properly. A 2-bed house with one bathroom and a living room comes to 150 minutes – two and a half hours. At two hours you are 30 minutes short, so something gets a lighter touch, and it is far better that you choose what than that your cleaner guesses.

A realistic minute-by-minute: 2 hours in a 2-bed house

Here is a sensible two-hour visit in a terrace or semi of the kind you find all over Sale and Stockton Heath, tidy but not cleaned for a fortnight.

  • 0 to 5 minutes. Walk through, read your notes, get the bathroom cleaner on so it has time to work.
  • 5 to 40 minutes. Kitchen. Worktops wiped, hob degreased, sink and taps descaled, fronts of the oven, fridge and cupboards wiped, microwave inside, bin emptied, floor left until the end.
  • 40 to 65 minutes. Bathroom. Toilet inside and out, basin, bath or shower, screen and tiles, taps and shower head descaled, mirror, floor. This is where Cheshire's hard water eats the time – a limescaled shower screen can swallow ten minutes on its own.
  • 65 to 85 minutes. Living room and hall. Surfaces, shelves, sills and switches dusted and wiped, cushions straightened.
  • 85 to 100 minutes. Bedrooms, light touch. Beds straightened, surfaces and sills dusted, nothing moved or rearranged.
  • 100 to 118 minutes. Floors throughout. Vacuum every room including stairs, then mop the hard floors, working back towards the door.
  • 118 to 120 minutes. Bins out, a last look round, a note of anything that needs longer next time.

Nothing there is rushed, but notice what is absent: no oven interior, no inside windows, no fridge, no cupboard interiors, no skirting boards on hands and knees. Those are deep-clean jobs and they do not fit.

What two hours will not stretch to

Inside windows, whole house30 to 60 minutesAdd-on
Inside the fridge or freezer20 to 30 minutesAdd-on, empty it first

Tidying and putting away clutterUnlimitedDo it yourself before the visit

That last row costs people the most money. A cleaner who has to clear a worktop before wiping it is being paid cleaning rates to tidy, and tidying is the one job you can do faster than a professional because you know where everything goes. Ten minutes of clearing surfaces the night before buys you a whole extra room.

How much two hours costs

Our rates are per hour, the same whatever the house: £24.99 weekly, £28.99 fortnightly, £30.99 for a deep clean and £32.99 for an end of tenancy clean. A two-hour visit is about £50 weekly or £58 fortnightly.

For context, Checkatrade's 2026 house cleaning guide puts regular domestic cleaning at roughly £20 to £25 an hour outside London and £22 to £27 inside it, with independents often lower and agencies higher. Two hours is also the minimum visit most UK companies take, because a cleaner cannot build a round out of one-hour jobs with 20 minutes of driving between them.

We pay our cleaners £17 an hour, every Monday, which matters here: a cleaner paid properly for two hours works at a sustainable pace and still does the kitchen properly at minute 35.

Is two hours or two and a half the right booking?

Use the table at the top. Count your rooms, add up the minutes, and book the nearest half hour above the total. As a rule of thumb:

  • 1-bed flat, one bathroom – two hours, with room for an extra job most visits.
  • 2-bed house, one bathroom – two and a half hours does it fully; two hours works if the bedrooms stay light.
  • 3-bed house, one bathroom – two and a half hours, what most of our regular customers book.
  • 4-bed, two or more bathrooms – three to three and a half hours.
  • A house not properly cleaned in months – start with a deep clean at around four hours, then drop to a shorter regular visit.

If you are unsure, book the shorter visit and tell your cleaner it is deliberately tight. After one or two visits they will tell you honestly whether the house needs another half hour, and you can change it from your account – no contract, no fee.

How to brief a cleaner so the right things get done

The difference between a good two-hour clean and a frustrating one is almost always the brief, not the cleaner.

  1. Rank your rooms. Your top three, in order. Most people say kitchen, main bathroom, then whichever room they sit in.
  2. Name two things you always notice. The hob, the shower screen, the kitchen floor – whatever makes the house feel clean to you. These get done first, every visit.
  3. Say what to skip. The spare room nobody uses, the shelf of ornaments. Permission to skip something buys time elsewhere.
  4. Flag anything delicate. Natural stone, waxed wood, a radiator that drips.
  5. Rotate the extras. One bigger job per visit – inside windows one time, skirting the next, the fridge after. Over two months the whole house gets attention without paying deep-clean rates.
  6. Say when something was not right. Within 24 hours we send someone back to put it right under our happiness guarantee.

With ReadyClean you keep the same cleaner every visit, which is what makes a brief worth writing: you explain it once. Every cleaner is interviewed and DBS-checked by us, we are insured, supplies are included, no card is needed to book, and you are invoiced after the clean with 7 days to pay.

Full details are on our weekly and fortnightly cleaning page, and the local pages have typical prices and availability for Sale, Stockton Heath, Altrincham and the rest of the areas we cover.

Frequently asked questions

Is 2 hours enough for a cleaner?

For a 1-bed flat with one bathroom, yes – that is about 125 minutes of work on our own room timings, so two hours covers it properly. For a 2-bed house two hours works if you prioritise the kitchen, bathroom and floors and accept a lighter touch in the bedrooms. For a 3-bed house, book two and a half hours.

What should a cleaner get done in 2 hours?

A full kitchen, a full bathroom, surfaces dusted and wiped in the rooms you use most, floors vacuumed throughout and hard floors mopped, and bins emptied. Oven interiors, windows, fridges, cupboards and skirting boards throughout do not fit in two hours.

How can I get more out of a 2-hour clean?

Clear the surfaces and floors before your cleaner arrives, leave a short list of your top three rooms, and rotate one extra job per visit rather than asking for everything every time. Tidying is the single biggest time thief in a short visit.

What does 2 hours of cleaning cost in Cheshire?

With ReadyClean, about £50 for a weekly visit at £24.99 an hour or about £58 fortnightly at £28.99 an hour. Published UK guides put regular domestic cleaning at roughly £20 to £25 an hour outside London, with independents often lower and agencies higher.

Why do cleaners have a 2-hour minimum?

Because travel time has to be paid for by someone. A cleaner driving 20 minutes between jobs cannot run a viable round on one-hour visits, so two hours is the standard minimum across most of the UK industry.

Should I book a deep clean first?

If the house has not had a thorough clean in several months, yes. A deep clean at £30.99 an hour resets the oven, limescale, skirting and the jobs a short visit never reaches, and a two or two-and-a-half hour regular visit then keeps it there.
